How to Refresh and Maintain Your Reed Diffuser

Reed diffusers are one of the easiest ways to bring those beachy vibes into your home without having to light anything, plug anything in, or even think about it once it’s set up. But if your scent is starting to fade or you’re not getting that same coastal punch you once did—don’t toss it! A little refresher is all it takes to get your diffuser back in action.

Here’s how to make your reed diffuser feel like it just stepped off the boardwalk:

1. Flip the Reeds

This is your first go-to move when the scent feels a little weak. Gently remove the reeds from the bottle and flip them over so the saturated end is now exposed to the air. Boom—your scent should get a boost almost instantly.

Pro Tip: Do this over the sink or a towel to avoid any oil drips on your counters.

2. Swap Out Old Reeds

Reeds don’t last forever (especially if they’ve been working hard). Over time, they can get clogged with dust or gunked up with old oil. If it's been a few months and your scent isn’t coming through like it used to, it’s time to replace them.

3. Clean the Bottle

If you’re refilling your diffuser with a new scent or it’s just been sitting for a while, give the bottle a quick clean. Just rinse it with warm, soapy water, then rinse again (no one wants soapy reed oil), and let it dry completely before adding new oil.

4. Refill with Fresh Oil

Running low? Refill your bottle with your favorite beach-inspired fragrance oil. Use a funnel to avoid messy spills (trust us, it helps) and don’t overfill—about two-thirds full is just right.

5. Try a New Spot

If your diffuser just isn’t throwing scent like it used to, it might be your space. Move it to a smaller room or a spot with better airflow—like a bathroom, entryway, or near a vent (but not directly on it).

A Few Extra Tips

  • Flip your reeds every week or two for consistent fragrance.

  • Replace reeds every 2–3 months if you're using the same scent, or every time you change scents.

  • Don’t mix oils unless you're into DIY scent experiments (no judgment!).

With just a few easy steps, your diffuser can go from barely-there to full-on “I swear I just heard waves crashing.” Whether you’re freshening up your favorite scent or switching it out for a new one, keeping things clean and maintained will make your space smell like your favorite beach town, all day long.
